A message from Donna
Since our last newsletter at the beginning of March I have attended more of the employee representative sessions, which have been formed as part of the National Living Wage consultation process.
As I mentioned in the last newsletter, you have chosen well. And we have received some constructive thoughts on how we may face our challenges that the introduction of the National Living Wage brings, I have also been asked some challenging questions about the company's position and the information that has informed the proposals that have been shared with you to date. I welcome having the opportunity to respond to these questions, as it provides the opportunity to build understanding and give some thought to any learning that can be taken from going through the process....

Beside the seaside
Brian and Shane, two of the gentlemen supported by Affinity, enjoyed a trip to the seaside recently as they visited Blackpool for the day.
After visiting the famous Blackpool Tower, they had a wander around the shops on the promenade before enjoying hot dogs by the sea.
They’re now busy planning their return trip to the town, as they had so much fun. |
Cooking up a treat
At Affinity we take healthy living very seriously, and take pride in our cooking.
Recently support worker Mandy Berry, assisted Sharon to spend an afternoon cooking chicken, leek and bacon pasta.

Egg painting fun
At Affinity we celebrated Easter by spending time with the people we support painting colourful eggs.
Armed with a range of colours and a supply of eggs, we set to work, and we were all very proud of the final results which make a great addition to the house.

St Patrick’s Day festivities
Birch Green residents were looking for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow recently, when they celebrated the life of the patron saint of Ireland on Saint Patrick’s Day.
The annual festivity, also sometimes referred to as the Feast of Saint Patrick, falls on March 17 which is said to be the date Saint Patrick died.

Thank you for the music!
Recently children from nearby Dalton Primary School popped in to entertain us at Birch Green.
The group, of around 10 youngsters, stopped by to treat us to a mini concert of songs about Mother’s Day and Easter.

Easter bonnets on parade
At Birch Green Care Home we donned our best, most colourful hats for an Easter bonnet parade, and after the hugely successful afternoon tea party that we held last month in our Tea for Two bistro, for our residents families & friends, we decided to hold another one on Good Friday.
It was a beautiful sunny afternoon and there was plenty of tea, fresh cream scones & homemade cakes on offer.
Our ladies and gentlemen joined in with the Good Friday activity, and the winner of the prize for best headgear was David Goulding.

Time for tea
A group of Riversway’s residents and staff headed to The Blitz Tearoom in Weston-super-Mare recently for some refreshment.
The lovely café, just a short walk from the coast, is full of wartime mementoes, and we all enjoyed a nice cup of tea, scones and cakes. |
Keeping fit and healthy at Riversway
Health and fitness is one of the most important elements of life at Riversway Nursing Home.
As a result we have a visit every two weeks by local physiotherapist Andy, in one of the most popular activities we run at the home.

One of our residents, Roy, took great pride and pleasure in helping to tidy our garden recently.
Roy joined our gardener, Haley, assisting as she went to work with hedge trimmers. Roy was a big help with his broom, helping to clear our patio, and he loved spending time outdoors.
A big thanks goes to both Roy and Haley for their hard work. |

Ann’s embroidery
Ann, a resident of Springhill Care Home, has been working hard on her embroidery for more than a year.
Talented Ann attends weekly craft sessions and even requested that nobody visits her on a Tuesday so she can attend them all.
She has now finished her project, a fabulous picture of her cat, ‘Orlando’ and is delighted with the result.
She said: “’I never thought I would manage to achieve this, but now I have I am very proud.’’

‘Critters’ welcomed to Springhill Care Home
Animal specialists from Coopers Critters stopped by Springhill with some very unusual guests recently.
A snake, tortoise, rabbit and lizard were among the critters which interacted with our spellbound residents.
Run by Beccy Cooper and based in nearby Clayton-le-Moors, Coopers Critters is a great organisation which provides educational animal encounters for establishments including schools, nurseries and care homes.
There were plenty of smiles as our brave residents posed with a snake over their shoulders or happily petting a lizard.
